Today is National Donut Day, a holiday started by the Salvation Army in 1938 to honor World War I “Donut Lassies”, who served soldiers near the front lines. Several DFW-area chains have free donut offers, including Krispy Kreme, Dunkin’ and Shipley Do-Nuts. Restrictions may apply.

Elon Musk is expected to become the world's first trillionaire when SpaceX goes public next Friday. John D. Rockefeller (1839-1937), the founder of Standard Oil Company, became the world's first confirmed billionaire in 1916. John Law (1671-1729) and John Jacob Astor (1763-1848) are among the first recognized millionaires.

Fort Worth Christian shortstop Grady Emerson is the high school Gatorade National Baseball Player of the Year. The University of Texas commit is expected to be a top-3 pick in the July Major League Baseball draft. 

Richland Hills' TND Geomatics has merged with David Lewis and North Richland Hills' Spry Surveyors. Together, the companies have decades of surveying expertise, trusted client relationships, and a shared commitment to delivering exceptional land surveying and geomatics services. Joe Cortez is President of TND Geomatics. 

Alliance Clinical Network and Atlas Clinical Research will merge, bringing together nearly 50 years of research experience across seven states. The companies share a common ideal to enhance quality and deliver excellence in clinical trial recruitment and execution. Anthony Milonas, CEO of Alliance Clinical Network will lead the new entity, which will be headquartered in Southlake. Amulet Capital Partners and BPOC, two healthcare-focused private equity firms, also are invested.

Canada announced the purchase of 26 Lockheed Martin High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, associated munitions and a comprehensive 10-year industrial and economic plan, contributing to a North American defense industrial base that is secure and strong. 

Real estate news:

  • Piattello Italian Kitchen, a concept from chef Marcus Paslay at From Scratch Hospitality, will move in November from its 10-year stay at Waterside to The Offices at Clearfork at the corner of Marathon Avenue and Ozona Boulevard (5137 Marathon Avenue). Piattello’s new iteration will occupy 5,620 square feet with approximately 160 seats inside, 40 seats on the patio, and will add lunch service to its nightly operation. The Offices at Clearfork is a new three-story, 70,000-square-foot building.

  • After having denied a proposal for a mixed-use development, the Grapevine city council reversed course and approved a hotel and multi-family housing on 28.7 acres. Dallas-based developer Trammell Crow Company proposed adding up to 248 multi-family units and a 222-room, six-story Sandman Signature Hotel to the area near Grapevine Mills mall. 

  • Nestle USA renewed its lease for the 524,252-square-foot distribution facility at 13600 Independence Parkway in north Fort Worth. The U.S. affiliate of the Swiss food maker was represented by David Eseke with Cushman & Wakefield. Matt Carthey of Holt Lunsford Commercial repped the landlord, Clarion Partners.

  • DICK’S Sporting Goods completed its 800,000-square-foot Fort Worth distribution center, its first in Texas and sixth nationwide. The facility was constructed by Hillwood Construction Services within Hillwood’s Risinger/35 Logistics Park on an 89.5-acre site. The supply chain hub is designed to support distribution to more than 100 stores across multiple states. 

  • HyProMag USA, a rare earth magnet recycling and manufacturing company, has taken possession of its approximately 125,000-square-foot Denton facility, which is expected to become the hub of recycling and manufacturing for additional sites in South Carolina and Nevada. 

  • Amped Fitness, a full-service 24/7 club, is opening its 13th Texas location this summer in 32,895 square feet at Watauga Pavilion on Denton Highway. The site is a former Party City.

American Airlines is sidelining routes as gas prices soar. On the other wing, is it planning to get back into the bigger plane, longer haul flights?

The annual Texas tradition of Free Fishing Day is tomorrow, annually the first Saturday in June. Texans and out-of-state visitors can cast their lines without a fishing license on a public waterway.

Southlake has filed an $8.2-million plan with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation for a project to renovate North Park, which is a multi-purpose park that includes multiple sports fields used by youth and adult leagues in the area. Here is what is scheduled to be done. 

Bell Textron laid off approximately 285 employees in Fort Worth, Amarillo and Wichita, jobs primarily tied to the MV-75 tiltrotor aircraft program. CEO Danny Maldonado said the cuts reflect a shift in budget allocations and government funding realities, not performance. In addition, the company said the first flight of the MV-75 remains paramount and long-term production prospects for 2027 and beyond are strong.

Don't book anything just yet! Fort Worth has changed direction and will plan to build a new downtown library from the ground up. The building it had purchased for the library, the former Center for Transforming Lives at 512 W. 4th St., no longer seems appealing. 512 is to become a community arts building (there's a committee for that) and the city assures there will be a 20k-to-30k square-foot library downtown. 

An experimental drug called daraxonrasib nearly doubled survival time for patients with advanced pancreatic cancer, according to study results. The disease kills more than 52,000 Americans annually and carries a five-year survival rate of 13%. The FDA expedited review of the drug and opened an expanded access program. Researchers are exploring whether daraxonrasib could treat colorectal and lung cancers.

Burnett Park in downtown Fort Worth has a new look for summer, with seasonal installations now on display. Take advantage of photo ops like flags flying in honor of the World Cup, streamers overhead, and stationary bikes that glow when you cycle.

TCU and Advanced Functional Fabrics of America will launch a workforce development initiative, the Texas Advanced Certificate in Textiles for Innovation and Composites. It is designed to prepare students and workers for careers in advanced textiles, soft-goods engineering and next-generation manufacturing. Tarrant County College also is involved.

A Federal Court denied an injunction to stop the sale of Texas bullion depository coins. It allows the suit to move forward despite arguments by Texas for sovereign immunity.
