NOTABLE & QUOTABLE:

“A coach is someone who tells you what you don’t want to hear, who has you see what you don’t want to see, so you can be who you have always known you could be.”

The United Auto Workers (UAW) union’s contract with Ford, General Motors (GM), and Stellantis is set to expire September 14. If a strike occurs, it could have a significant impact on Texas’ economy, most notably Arlington. According to the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, the auto industry generates $3.6 billion in tax revenue on new car sales in Texas, which represents more than 5% of all state tax revenue. The Dallas Morning News reports that if a strike lasts as long as 2019’s 40-day strike against GM, the effects could be devastating to Arlington, where GM’s SUV assembly plant is located, Texas car dealerships, and businesses nationwide supported by the 146,000 workers at the automakers’ plants.

The IRS is using AI to detect sophisticated tax violations by high-income earners and large business partnerships. Targets include hedge funds, real estate investment partnerships, publicly traded partnerships and big law firms. The IRS is prioritizing cases involving taxpayers with incomes above $1 million but tax debts of more than $250,000, according to Axios. Some 1,600 taxpayers fall under this category and "owe hundreds of millions of dollars," according to the IRS.
