Jean SimĂ©on Chardin’s 1760 painting The Cut Melon is headed to the Kimbell Art Museum, despite a failed attempt to win it at auction. Last June, the Chardin painting set a record for the artist when it sold for $30.3 million to Nanni Bassani Antivari. When Antivari failed to pay, underbidder Kimbell was able to purchase the painting directly from the painting's owners, the descendants of the Rothschild family.

An unnamed Texas woman has taken legal action against the state's lottery commission over an unpaid alleged $83.5 million jackpot. The woman, identified as Jane Doe, claimed she had the winning ticket for the Feb. 17 drawing, having purchased it via an unregulated mobile application called Jackpocket, which serves as liaisons for clients to purchase tickets from authorized retailers.

Texas Monthly ranks the state's top barbecue restaurants every four years. Two of this cycle's Top 10 are in north Texas — No. 3 — Goldee's Barbecue in Fort Worth, No. 1 in 2021, dropped two spots. Dayne's Craft Barbecue in Aledo, a newcomer to the Top 10, is ranked No. 7.

A bill that would establish “Texas Time,” or permanent daylight-saving time in the state, has gone to Gov. Abbott's desk, but it has no teeth. The change will occur only if federal lawmakers allow states to do so; 19 states have similar laws pending. Two states -- Arizona and Hawaii -- do not change their clocks.

Texas House and Senate members have approved a bill increasing the amount of money to up to $500 million that the state spends to attract film and television productions. The Texas comptroller would deposit $500 million into a Texas Moving Image Industry Incentive Fund every two years until 2035. Eligible expenses include Texas workers’ wages, meals purchased from local restaurants, and airfare on Texas-based airlines.

The Texas Legislature has voted to ban THC, and the proposed law awaits Gov. Abbott's signature. The Texas Tribune has a lowdown on what this could mean come Sept. 1.

The Texas Legislature passed a bill to allow a period for prayer or religious study in schools. The bill goes to Gov. Greg Abbott, who is expected to sign it for a Sept. 1 start. School districts must vote on whether or not to allow the prayer or study period within six months — but permits students, with consent of a parent or guardian, to have a prayer or study period either way. It also bans any prayer or religious reading over a loudspeaker, or in the presence of any student who does not have a consent form signed.

In response to what Gov. Abbott deemed a severe crises, Texas lawmakers have agreed to allocate $1 billion a year to water projects for 20 years. Because it would change the state's Constitution, it will have to be approved by voters.

The 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Ky., will be the first to receive the MV-75 Future Long-Range Assault Aircraft. The Bell Textron-made tiltrotor will replace a significant portion of the Black Hawk helicopter fleet.

Mansfield voted unanimously to approve a Chapter 380 agreement toward the possible construction of the city’s first Costco store. Costco would receive up to $8 million in incentives to build the store, which would be located at the northwest corner of Lone Star Road and U.S. Highway 287.

Wistron Corp., a Taiwanese technology manufacturer, is eyeing far north Fort Worth for a supercomputer in partnership with Nvidia. The company could invest an estimated $687 million if it chooses roughly one million square feet of space between two locations. Fort Worth will consider tax breaks. Wistron expects the site to be completed within 15 months.

CorVel Corp. reported profit of $26.4 million in its fourth quarter. The Fort Worth-based health care management company posted revenue of $231.5 million. For the fiscal year, it reported profit of $95.2 million on revenue of $895.6 million.

Tarrant County has engaged AvĂšro Advisors to lead Enterprise Resource Planning landscape assessment and strategic road-mapping.

ESPN Events announced a 16-team college volleyball showdown between the ACC and SEC conferences Sept. 9-10.  The wholly owned ‘Showdown at the Net’ will include four teams playing at Dickies Arena -- Pitt, Kentucky, Louisville and Texas.

Bags no longer fly free for most Southwest Airlines passengers. Southwest will charge passengers $35 for their first checked bag and $45 for a second, with additional fees for overweight or oversized luggage.

  • Paris Baguette has opened a seventh D-FW location at 2700 N. Tarrant Pkwy. Known for pastries, bread, cakes, and brewed drinks, it is the first 817-area outpost for the chain. The owners are sisters Smitha Suravaram and Harisha Gunna, and Ratnakar Pingili.

  • After three years, chef Ben Merritt's restaurant The Fitzgerald will close June 7. The steak and seafood spot opened on Camp Bowie Boulevard in 2022.

  • Fast food, come and gone. Fewer than two years in, McDonald's is closing all its futuristic CosMc’s locations by late June.

Fort Worth-based AIR, a leading original equipment manufacturer of mid-size eVTOLs, said its un-crewed aircraft for the logistics market successfully completed advanced night-time flight demonstrations, a first in the category. It is a critical milestone in solidifying standard operating procedures.
